There are no known risk factors for parathyroid carcinoma , although benign tumors of the parathyroids (adenoma) occur more often if there has been previous radiation to the head and neck. Parathyroid adenomas also occur in association with tumors of the adrenal and thyroid glands (multiple endocrine neoplasia—MEN type-2).
